You found my new blog - welcome!

I'm the local councillor for 12 villages in the south of Cambridgeshire - Duxford, Fowlmere, Foxton, Great & Little Chishill, Newton, Heydon, Hinxton, Ickleton, Pampisford, Shepreth, Whittlesford and Thriplow.

The railways are coming - and so maybe are the housing developments...

The Oxford-Milton Keynes-Cambridge arc is something that the government has put quite a bit of effort into. The National Infrastructure Commission report published late last year talked of linking up the knowledge based economies of the two great university cities - and the growth and innovation in between, especially at Milton Keynes, to create the equivalent of the tech-areas on the east and west coasts of America. Road and - especially - rail links were proposed, the routes for which have yet to be decided.

Now one thing that does seem to be rapidly coming to a head is a desire by the government to encourage district councils to come forward and identify sites for substantial new developments. Although its the summer break, South Cambridgeshire's new LibDem administration will have to start wrestling with that one pretty quickly as the government is seeking early bids identifying sites by September this year. If the council puts forward possible sites then it will have to manage the fall-out from the villages that generally speaking don't want large settlements added to them or built next to them. If it sends a lemon back to the government, however prettily wrapped up, then the risk is the government presses ahead with other players keen to encourage house building in South Cambridgeshire.
