Fowlmere - breathing new life into a Victorian school building
We popped in to the art exhibition at Fowlmere school over the weekend. Its a fundraiser for the school as well as a showcase for local artists. And there was cake too!
The Victorian school buildings are being transformed under the new head, Philip, and I was there a few weeks back with him and Sarah Burge, energetic chair of governors. Philip told me some of the staff came in over a holiday to re-paint and brighten up a corridor in the old building, and yesterday the school looked inviting and colourful.
In recent weeks I've been working with the school and governors to ensure that decisions made at the county council benefit Fowlmere school when it comes to who gets access to the money paid by developers (known as Section 106 money) when they build houses in a village. We had a simialr situation in Whittlesford a few years back.
I'm pleased that the county education department has been more co-operative and recognises the ambition and energy that exists at the school and that money from developers will go towards realising the school's aspirations!
