Roll up! Its the Local Highways Improvement bidding season!

Roll up! Its the Local Highways Improvement bidding season!

The bid deadline for LHI applications is Tuesday 31st July 2018. This is the annual opportunity for parish councils to bid for local highways improvements for which the county council will fund most and the parish council a minimum of ten per cent.

Over the years I have supported parish councils in bids to move speed signs further out from the ir villages, put in chicanes and speed bumps to slow down traffic, instal zebra crossings near schools, and move a footpath away from a busy blind corner. The ideas do not have to be fully baked because once the scheme is in, the bidding parish council will be contacted by a project officer to develop a Feasibility Study. This was introduced a few years back so that villages were not having to become fully fledged road engineers and find technical solutions overnight. The Feasibility Study will still be presented to the LHI Member Advisory Panel by the parish so need good presentational skills.

The picture shows the junction of the A505 and Gravel Pit Hill at Thriplow where better signs and road markings was the successful bid by the parish council.
