You found my new blog - welcome!

I'm the local councillor for 12 villages in the south of Cambridgeshire - Duxford, Fowlmere, Foxton, Great & Little Chishill, Newton, Heydon, Hinxton, Ickleton, Pampisford, Shepreth, Whittlesford and Thriplow.

A lot more light for your money!

A lot more light for your money!

Ickleton is one of the two pilot sites for a South Cambs District scheme replacing sodium street lights (the old yellow ones) with LED which have three advantages: they cost about a sixth of the cost of a sodium one to operate, so saving money for the parish councils who pay the energy bills, they last up to 15 years whereas the old ones last about three years,  and they project light in a much better way, downwards onto the pavement rather than everywhere, so reducing light pollution in our villages.

I was there with Mark Howell, the portfolio holder for environmental issues at South Cambs, and also the parish council chair, Terry Sadler.

If the pilot scheme evaluation shows its worth then these street lights could be offered to parish councils through the district, saving money and making better use of energy.
