Whittlesford allotments do their bit for bees!
After a detailed and informed discussion Whittlesford Parish Council agreed last week to allow bees to kept on the allotments at Moorfield/Newton Road subject to some safety requirements. This had been discussed in the past and the request turned doen because the allotments have a footpath running through the middle, and the concern was that bees can be disturbed and defend their territory.
Five years ago a group of us turned a disused allotment into a small community orchard complete with a bench to sit and watch people toiling away, as well as view the orchard itself. The land given over to the orchard incorporated some of Fred Winter's fruit trees, and so it is nice to think that one day the old and the new trees will blend into one.
So now with the bees coming too, the allotments are doing their bit for sustainability, as well as healthy fruit and veg on the side!
