Bids in for Highways Improvement Initiatives
Over the last few weeks villages have been putting in bids to the county council for what is known as the Minor Highways Improvement Initiative, which sees the relevant parish offering to contribute 10% to a scheme to improve safety or manage traffic in their village.
Ive been impressed by the help the county council's highways teams have offered to villages. Early one morning the boys from the depot at Whittlesford and I went over to Ickleton at about 7.40 to talk to parents about safety at the bus stop in Abbey Street. I arranged for Shepreth Parish Council to spend a morning with the highways team talking through speed signs being moved to extend the lower speed limit. Whittlesford are putting in a bid to lower the speeds along a fast moving road leading into the village. Other bids are coming in and I hope as many as possible are successful.
The process is a competitive one - not all bids succeed - and that in itself has driven up the quality of the proposals from villages over the last few years.
